Is Satellite right for me?

Chances are you have never used a satellite phone before.  If you have you are already ahead of the game.  Satellite phones are different from cellular in several ways.

Cellular phone are cell based with a network area divided into small areas where an antenna is installed.  When a cellular phone is moving, it keeps entering from one cell to another.  When it crosses the border of one cell the phone sends a signal to the MTSO (Mobile Telephone Switching Office).  With the help of control channel, the database of the MTSO relocates the phone in a new cell or area.  The MTSO and Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) coordinate to handle cellular calls.

Satellites are different.  Most services use Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites.  When the phone is turned on a signal goes up to any number of satellites of a group with whom the phone is regfistered.  When a person makes a call from the handset, a signal goes to the nearby orbiting satellite.  The satellite connects to a gateway (ground station) which carries the call to the destination.  Any call can be directed to the landline, cellular or PTSN.  Any of these can also receive a satellite phone call.  If a satellite phone calls another satellite phone, the call reaches a ground station through a satellite rather than cells for celluar phopnes.  The signal then goes to the satellite and down to the destination phone.  The gateway processes the switching of the calls, not the satellites.
